MacBook Pro gains M5 Pro and M5 Max; MacBook Air and iPad Air refreshed
Three days of releases across the Mac and iPad lines. The MacBook Neo and the iPhone 17e landed in the same stretch, and are covered separately.
M5 Pro and M5 Max — 3 March
The MacBook Pro 14″ and 16″ gained the M5 Pro and M5 Max, both manufactured on TSMC's 3nm node, with 16 Neural Engine cores and 61 TOPS.
The 18c CPU / 32c GPU M5 Max is the configuration to watch: a 384-bit bus at 460 GB/s and a single 36 GB memory option, against 512-bit, 614 GB/s and up to 128 GB on the 18c CPU / 40c GPU. Both chips would reach the Mac mini and Mac Studio six months later.
The same day, the MacBook Air 13″ picked up a 10c CPU / 8c GPU M5 — two GPU cores down on the 10c CPU / 10c GPU part in the 15″, though both run at 153.6 GB/s with the same 16, 24 and 32 GB options. No other device uses it.
M4 iPad Air — 2 March
The iPad Air 11″ and 13″ moved to the 8c CPU / 9c GPU M4.
